Stop-Motion Transformation of Takara/Tomy’s MP-41 Beast Wars Dinobot. Thanks to Beast Wars superfan Rob for the scene selection. Man this thing fell over a lot. We kept having this conversation:
"Ok, buddy, I have to take my hands out of frame"
--"Hey, no problem boo. I gotchoo"
"How about I just let go for a sec and see if you move"
--"See brah? I'm not movin' nowhere."
"Ok then, I will just take the pic-"
--Clank! "Bwaaaa ha ha. You so stoopid!"

Production Notes:
Planning:
I pretty much spent all of yesterday (Saturday) doing planning. I had to trim and produce the video sequence I rotoscoped from the cartoon, and plot out how things be timed.
Rotoscope:
I think it turned out really well. The rotoscope bit was 356 frames. I shot it at 12 fps against the cartoon as reference. The cartoon cuts away to a long view during “And yet, how ironic” so I just stayed put and guessed where the mouth should move. Somehow it worked perfectly and I didn’t have to edit the mouth movements at all. All told, I shot 1288 frames today between 9 AM and 5PM. Don’t expect this kind of thing all the time, it’s very labor intensive.
Movement:
I’m using a new technique for getting the camera to land exactly where I need it when moving from spot to spot. So I have everything ruled: rotation point of turntable, distance of camera from object, height of camera, tilt, and pan. I would take a picture and record the start point in a spreadsheet I made. Then I would find the end point and record those numbers in the sheet. Then I would move back to the start point. The sheet is set up to show me how much to move each parameter for each step for various step counts. I mostly used 12. The sheet was set up using what’s called a “Bezier”. So instead of moving from 0 to 12 inches in 12 steps by going 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (which would be a linear movement), the sheet helped me move .1, .3, .8, 1.7, 3.3, 6, 8.7, 10.3, 11.2, 11.7, 11.9, 12 - so a slow start, a fast middle and a slow end following a smooth mathematical curve. The only way I could do it better at this point would be with a $3000 piece of equipment. I currently spend $18 a month on software and receive $6 a month at Patreon, so don’t hold your breath.
