Wood & Wire — Jetglo Rickenbacker 360

I don a sparkly Sgt. Pepper jacket, play the opening riff from Sgt. Pepper, and show & tell my personal holy grail of guitars (and one of the sexiest guitars EVER) — the Rickenbacker 360.

This is the guitar that started it all for me. I was 14, I was diving into guitar with a ferocious appetite (for destruction), and I found out that R.E.M.’s guitarist, Peter Buck, played a Ric 360. Turns out The Beatles and Tom Petty played Rics, too. I was hooked.

Of course, when I started playing professionally and was finally able to afford one, I realized (to my great dismay) that they were the wrong sound for what I was doing — the jangly break up and hollowbody construction of a Ric 360 just wasn’t right for the metal-esque drop tuned, Mesa Rectifier-ed kind of tones that Bulletproof Messenger was churning out on our records. So I held off.

Fast forward a little while though, and I began working as a solo artist, writing and performing songs that were much more...in tune (dear lord, I hate me) with those early sounds of rock n’ roll that I’d been so hooked on. And so — you know it — I went right out and grabbed a Rickenbacker 360, in Jetglo, just like Peter’s. The only thing it’s missing is that super cool mudflap girl sticker that he has on his. But damn if I didn’t plug it in, rip out a few chords and think to myself “Yo, this is THE sound!!”.

I think everyone has an internalized idea, deep in their bones, their psyche, whatever — of what their quintessential version of rock n’ roll sounds like. You know when you hear certain sounds coming from a new band or song that you’re gonna like it, before it’s barely begun. This guitar is kinda like that 🖤🎶
