Punjab Groundwater Crisis 💧 | 97% Water Used for Paddy! 😨 | UPSC

There was a time when Punjab’s fields overflowed with water and prosperity. Today, beneath the same green fields, a silent groundwater crisis is unfolding. With 97% of Punjab’s groundwater used for irrigation, largely for paddy cultivation, experts warn that by 2039, water levels may drop beyond 1,000 feet.

But every crisis carries within it a possibility.

This Short tells the powerful story of Kahan Singh Pannu, retired IAS officer and former Agriculture Secretary of Punjab, who chose not comfort after retirement—but responsibility. Returning to his village, he introduced Seeding of Rice on Beds (SRB), a method that transformed farming practices.

Instead of flooding entire fields, rice was sown on raised beds, allowing water to flow only through narrow furrows directly to the roots.
The outcome was remarkable:

• Same yield of 24–28 quintals per acre
• 75% reduction in water usage
• Irrigation reduced from 20 times to just 4
• Savings of nearly ₹8000 per acre
