India’s Rice to Fight Global Hunger 🌍🍚 Strategic Move Explained | UPSC
🌍🍚 India’s Rice Diplomacy: Fighting Global Hunger
UPSC aspirants, imagine this — rice from India’s government godowns reaching Africa, West Asia, and even conflict-hit regions to combat hunger. This is not just trade; it’s strategy.
India has signed a five-year agreement with the World Food Programme, the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian body. The agreement was formalised between the Food Corporation of India and WFP, marking a significant step in global food diplomacy.
Under this pact, India will supply 200,000 metric tonnes of rice over the next five years. Up to 25% broken grains are allowed, aligning with humanitarian distribution norms. The current price is fixed at ₹2,800 per quintal until March 31, 2026, with annual revisions through mutual consultation — ensuring both predictability and flexibility.
Why is this strategic?
Global food insecurity is at alarming levels due to conflicts, climate shocks, droughts, and funding crises. Supply chains are increasingly vulnerable. In this context, India’s role as the world’s largest rice exporter becomes geopolitically significant.
Geography plays a key role here. India’s monsoon-dependent agriculture, surplus production from Green Revolution states like Punjab, Haryana, and Telangana, and large buffer stocks maintained by FCI make such commitments possible. At the same time, domestic food security is managed through mechanisms like the National Food Security Act and the Public Distribution System.
This agreement strengthens India’s soft power, especially across the Global South, positioning the country as both a food-secure nation and a humanitarian partner.
The SDG link is clear — Zero Hunger (Sustainable Development Goal 2).
This is not merely a rice shipment. It is a blend of agricultural geography, buffer stock policy, and diplomatic outreach creating a tangible global impact.
India is not just feeding its people — it is helping feed the world. 🌏🍚
