🌳 A School Without Classrooms: Delhi’s Green Learning Revolution

In the heart of Delhi, inside a simple neighbourhood park in Kidwai Nagar, an extraordinary classroom comes alive every weekend. No walls, no fees, no textbooks — just children sitting under the shade of trees, learning directly from nature.

This inspiring initiative, called the School of Trees, was started in 2025 by IRS officer Rohit Mehra. His idea was simple yet powerful: while children today recognise brands and trends, many cannot identify the trees around them.

Every weekend, nearly 45 children gather in the park. They explore how photosynthesis sustains life, why Delhi’s leaves are thicker compared to mountain species, and how trees absorb carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen. Instead of memorising definitions, they observe, question, and connect with their environment.

Rohit even introduced a “living alphabet” — A for Afforestation, B for Bamboo, E for Earth — turning environmental literacy into something interactive and memorable. There are no registrations or formalities. Children plant saplings, create seed balls, reuse plastic bottles as planters, and build a hands-on relationship with sustainability.

So far, nearly 200 community members have planted around 250 saplings through this initiative. The larger goal is not just plantation — it is to make caring for nature aspirational and “cool” for the younger generation.

His message is simple: when we leave this planet, we should give back at least two trees.

For UPSC aspirants, this real-life example beautifully connects to themes like Environmental Education, Sustainable Development, Community Participation, Ethical Leadership, and the Role of Civil Servants in Society.
