Sugar Plums
Thanks to “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” we’ve all heard of sugar plums, but what are they?
Some people claim they are balls of dried fruit rolled in sugar, but those were actually invented in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Traditional sugar plums weren’t plums at all, but hard candies called comfits—which is a general term for any candy that has a sugar shell around them (like M&Ms or Jordan almonds). Sugar plums were generally nuts or seeds that were coated in layers of hot, liquid sugar over several days. They were labor-intensive to make and very expensive until mechanization in the mid-1800s made it easier & cheaper.
Though they have plum in the name, they weren't purple or had any plum flavor to them. I’m not sure why they called them plums, but some sources hypothesize it was because they kind of look like a raisin and historic Brits often referred to any kind of dried fruit as a plum.
