Christmas Traditions & Ghost Stories!
Christmas traditions changed a TON between the Regency and Victorian era. Most of what we associate with Christmas was adopted by the Victorians in the later part of the 1800s, and in the earlier half of the century, Christmas itself was not one of the more important holidays of the year. It was often overshadowed by Michaelmas in September, which coincided with the harvest festivities celebrated throughout England.
So, in the early 1800s, there weren’t many Christmas trees, there wasn’t any Santa Claus, and though there was some gift-giving, it was generally focused on giving to the poor and wasn’t usually attached to Christmas morning.
However, there was one odd tradition that was popular throughout the 1800s and has been lost today – ghost stories!
To modern audiences, it might seem like it was a weird choice for Charles Dickens to feature ghosts and ghouls in “A Christmas Carol,” but for his audience, ghosts were a big part of the Christmas season. People often gathered around the fireplace to tell ghost stories in the dark of winter. So writing a ghoulish Christmas story actually made a lot of sense.
