Legging

In the 1700s & 1800s, canals were an important part of the transportation system in the UK. The barges and narrowboats were towed by horses that walked along the side of the river, but they couldn't traverse the tunnels. In order to get through them, the boats were "legged" through it. They'd lie on the sides of the boat and push their feet against the sides of the tunnel, propelling them forward. The busy tunnels even had professional "leggers."
