Christmas Trees in the 1800s

Many people credit Prince Albert for introducing Christmas trees to England in 1848 when an engraving was posted in the newspapers showing him and Queen Victoria decorating theirs together.

However, Queen Victoria’s grandmother, Queen Charlotte, first brought them to the country’s attention in 1800. She was German as well and brought the tradition with her, making them popular among many families, and though Albert certainly made it universally popular, Christmas trees were in British homes all throughout the 1800s.

In fact, Charles Dickens published stories that featured Christmas trees long before that 1848 engraving, so they weren’t uncommon.
