Why Did Soldiers Not Wear Helmets at the Outset of the First World War? #history #ww1 #helmet

Until the outbreak of the Great War and during its early months, soldiers' heads were covered more out of tradition than for protection: the French wore kepis, the British wore field caps, and the Germans wore the famous Pickelhaube, made of boiled leather and decorated with metal fittings. Steel helmets were avoided because of their weight, discomfort and cost, but above all because, at that time, it was expected that the next war would focus on mobility, not trenches. However, with the outbreak of the First World War, it became apparent on the battlefield that a large number of soldiers, regardless of which side they were on, were beginning to die from head injuries.
