The German Officer Who Died Trying to Save a US Soldier #history #ww2 #germany

On 12 November 1944, amid the brutal fighting of the Hürtgen Forest, 23-year-old Lieutenant Friedrich Lengfeld, commander of the 2nd Company of the Fusilier Battalion of the German 275th Infantry Division, demonstrated an extraordinary act of humanity.

After intense fighting with the 4th US Infantry Division, Lengfeld and his men heard cries for help from a wounded enemy soldier trapped in a minefield. Respecting the Geneva Conventions, Lengfeld ordered his troops not to fire on any American medics who might attempt a rescue. However, the soldier's cries continued for hours without any Allied response.

Determined to act, the young officer assembled a team of his own paramedics, equipped with Red Cross armbands and vests, and personally led the mission through the dangerous minefield.
