Venice Vanishing

The following documentary illustrates how the iconic soul of the Venice Beach community is at risk due to gentrification and climate change. Mark Booker lies at the heart of the narrative, as he is both a local Firefighter and a native of Venice, California. Booker describes the unique characteristics of his home, bolstered by accounts from other locals and visitors. Alyssa Newton Mann, the USC Sea Grant’s Regional Research and Planning Specialist, explains the environmental threats to the Venice Beach community, primarily a rising sea level and increased flood potential resulting from global warming and climate change. Nick Sadrpour, a Venice Beach resident and USC Sea Grant’s Science, Research, and Policy Specialist recognizes his role in the gentrification of Venice Beach, but he also provides insights into how individuals within the Venice Beach community can help protect the environment. Both gentrification and environmental threats jeopardize Venice Beach’s people and history, and solutions to both problems require old and new residents as well as local and global citizens to work together, regardless of race or culture.
