Shameless Stunt Coordinator Eddie Perez talks Season 7 stunts
Showtime’s comedy Shameless depicts the misadventures of the dysfunctional, lower-working-class Gallagher family. The series is famous for not just its characters’ verbal spats, but especially for their physical fights. Eddie Perez is the man behind every brawl, punch, kick, and fall. He was nominated for and won two Primetime Emmy awards for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or a Variety Program for the show’s six and seventh season.
Perez told WEBN stunts in Shameless are unique the action must complement the story line without creating a distraction.
“A lot of times, a lot of shows you’ll see, it’s about the action, and this is situational comedy. You don’t make a big deal of showing the stunt. It just happens and people keep walking. Then, if a lot of people go ‘I didn’t know there were that many stunts in Shameless,’ then I go ‘good, then we did our job.’”
Perez has helmed the action in movies like Deadpool, Shoot ’Em Up, Blade III, and many other films, TV series, and commercials. He explains the difference in stunt coordinating for a TV drama as opposed to an action movie is encompassing human realism rather than superhero spectacle.
“In Shameless, people beat the sh*t out of each other, and they don’t turn around and throw a kick. No spinning kick, no grappling. It’s down and dirty. It’s what you’d see, if you watch YouTube, what people do on the street.”
Season 8 of Shameless premieres Nov. 5 on Showtime.
