Federal prosecutors in Seattle see progress in reports of sexual assault on airplanes
When sexual assaults happen on flights to Seattle, the cases land at the office of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington Tessa Gorman.
Gorman says the federal prosecutors have seen a sharp rise in reports of sex assaults on board airplanes, but she credits that to victims being more willing to report it when it happens.
According to FBI case data, investigations of sexual misconduct on airplanes increased by 60% between 2019 and 2023. In Seattle, federal prosecutors have filed nine cases of abusive sexual contact on an airplane since a public awareness campaign last summer.
Many of the cases involve passengers who were asleep when they were assaulted.
