Gettysburg 160: The Heroism of Mag Palm
Margaret (“Mag”) Palm spent her early years as an orphan at the Adams County Almshouse. In adulthood she worked as a washerwoman in Gettysburg. While traveling home on the night of February 2, 1858, Palm was attacked by a group of men who attempted to kidnap her and throw her into the back of a wagon, presumably bound for slavery in Maryland or Virginia.
Contemporary accounts describe Palm as possessing “more than ordinary muscular power.” She managed to fight off her attackers, and later testified against them in court, becoming a local hero.
