Baking a Recipe from 1876
Join interns Kate Sallee, Camryn Counsil, James Duke and Colleen Bergmann as they bake tea cakes-- with a recipe found from the Gettysburg Centennial Cookbook from 1876.
Here's the recipe:
1 cup of buttermilk
1 pint of flour (2 cups of flour)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons melted butter or lard
1 egg
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of cream of tartar (or 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice)
Bake either in loaf or flat pans
Preheat the oven to 375.
Put butter and sugar in bowl and mix
Add egg and beat well
Beat in milk
Combine flour, baking soda & lemon juice
Bake for 7-8 minutes (15 minutes was what we used)
