Gettysburg 160: The Sherfy Cannonball

Three cherry trees stood along the north side of the Sherfy house, supposedly planted by an early settler in 1758. Although the trees survived the carnage of battle in July 1863, one was struck by a 12-pound solid shot that remained embedded for more than 75 years. When the tree finally died, the cannonball was removed. Sherfy’s great-granddaughter donated it to the Adams County Historical Society in 1956.
