Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas, Mexico has been one of the highlights of life in Mexico so far. This incredible canyon reaches up to 1000 meters deep and traveling through it by boat is like entering into another world.
Different micro environments have actually developed inside the canyon and some seriously amazing wildlife calls this place home. Including spider monkeys, river crocodiles, anteaters, jaguarundi, ocelots, lowland pacas, and more!
We personally saw several monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, and many unique bird species.
The canyon also has many beaches and caves. There are also several waterfalls including the seasonal Arbol de Navidad Waterfall, or 'Christmas Tree Waterfall'. Which had no waterfall while we were there, but is still featured in the video. It's spectacular and MASSIVE either way!

Depending on the tour you book, you'll either start or end in the adorable pueblo magico (magic town) called Chiapa de Corzo. It's a beautiful riverside town full of history, markets, and delicious food and makes the trip to the canyon even more enjoyable. The canyon is located just outside the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, which is the largest city in the state of Chiapas. However, many tourists come from the beloved town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, which is about an hour away and tends to offer more tours into the canyon.

If you're booking a tour and not driving yourself to the area, make sure to book a tour that takes you to the miradores (overlooks) above the canyon AND includes a boat tour through the canyon. Both are incredible and should not be missed.
