The One Where We Die In Alabama (Jackson Lake Island, Abandoned Movie Set, and GOATS!)
Jackson Lake Island is a CRAZY hidden gem just outside of Montgomery, Alabama. Not only is it absolutely BEAUTIFUL, surrounded by water and covered with trees draped in Spanish Moss...it also has dozens of goats AND an abandoned old movie set town. What more could you ask for? Campsites? It has those too! This seriously has become one of our favorite trips. It's just a unique and fun place.
Tim Burton's 'Big Fish' was filmed there in the early 2000s and the fictional town of 'Spectre' was left up, some of the set has since been destroyed by flooding and inclement weather but there's still plenty left to see. The goats have now completely taken over the town of props and even live under the church, they go wherever they want on the entire island and are super friendly!
If that wasn't enough, the nearby city of Montgomery is so charming and historical...it's well worth a visit. We found the state of Alabama to be incredibly underrated itself. Having mountains, coastline, and loaded with biodiversity. It's actually the 5th most biodiverse state in the country, and the 4 above it are more than double its size! It ranks number one in North America for species of turtles, freshwater fish, snails, and mussels. Alabama also has some of the most inland waterways of almost any state, over 1,500 miles! This is super evident on Jackson Lake Island, which is surrounded by unique looking birds, fish, and plant life. Major props to the owners for leaving it wild and undeveloped!
We HIGHLY recommend a visit to Montgomery and when you go, do NOT miss the beautiful and rare Jackson Lake Island! You can bring a tent, take your RV, rent the tiny house on the island, or even just visit for the day! Either way, the friendly goats can't wait to meet you.
We had fun making this video a bit more 'silly' than usual ;) Hope you enjoy! Please don't forget to like and subscribe! Have you been to Alabama? What are your favorite unique travel destinations?
