The Three Degrees ~ Dirty Ol Man 1973 Disco Purrfection Version

Ah the revolving door of the Three Degrees...the group was formed in 1963 Philadelphia with Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Porter and Linda Turner as charter members. With producer/writer Richard Barrett at the helm they scored their first single with "Gee Baby (I'm Sorry) for Swan Records which entered the chart at #100 March 6, 1965. It fell of the chart the following week, but the week after that it re-entered at #99. A few weeks later it peaked at #80 and then was off the chart for good. Disenchanted with the chart performance, Turner and Porter jumped ship and were replaced by Helen Scott and finally Janet Harmon. Scott left shortly thereafter, so Barrett replaced her with Sheila Ferguson, a protege of his and a schoolmate of Helen Scott. More singles were released to varying degrees of success until 1967 when Harmon left and Valerie Holiday took her place. Due to their tight harmonies and stage charisma, they became an in demand nightclub act and worked constantly, honing their craft. They finally reached a recording deal with the infamous Roulette label headed by honcho Morris Levy and released the LP "Maybe" in 1970 and then gained an onscreen gig in the 1971 film "The French Connection". Once the Roulette deal ended, Barrett signed them to Philadelphia International Records in 1973. Gamble & Huff immediately wrote songs tailored for the girls exquisite harmonies, but used them first to provide vocals on the smash hit "TSOP" by MFSB. Once their own album, "Three Degrees International" was completed, the first single issued was "Dirty Ol Man", followed by "Year Of Decision" but it was the third single that was the charm, "When Will I See You Again". It peaked at #2, unable to kick Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting" out of the top spot. They were unable to repeat their successes and in the late 70's turned to Giorgio Moroder for guidance and wound up with club hits in "Giving Up, Giving In", "The Runner", "Jump The Gun" and "Set Me Free". This new beefier sound was worlds away from the warm gloss of their Philadelphia International hit, but they helped to keep the disco beat alive until 1980.
