Living In Bali – Nusa Dua, Sanur and Amed (2019)

Our stay in Bali started In Nusa Dua, which we felt would be a pleasant way to start our trip. The area has the top resorts and good swimming beaches. We found a hotel on the perimeter of the resort so we could experience the area at a reasonable cost. We were disappointed. The resort area had a nice walk that took you past the resorts. They were all high end and self-contained backing onto the beach. The resorts really had denuded the area of a genuine Balinese experience.
Swimming was not good, either. The tide was out during the afternoon, which made swimming impossible. Water depth was a few inches and walking to the sea was a few hundred metres and rocky with coral.
Within three days we moved to Sanur, which is only a few miles away but busy with traffic. The whole of the southern tip of the island and Denpasar, Bali’s capital, is full of traffic with mediocre air quality. Many of the beaches have much rubbish. The standard of accommodation, the food and prices are very reasonable, especially compared with Australia, which many of its tourists come from. A number come here to drink and party.
We headed north-east to Amed, about 2.5 hours by taxi from Sanur. All taxis we took were Grab for comparatively cheap, transparent pricing. The fare was about £20. Most taxi drivers will take you for a day trip round Bali for about 500,000 rupiah, about £28.
Amed was much more what we wanted from Bali. Great snorkelling, and it still has live coral, unlike many tourist spots.
