The Scottish Highlands by Car

This is s a record of our four-day journey to the Highlands of Scotland. I had promised to take Inessa years ago. Scotland kept coming back on the agenda. For some reason it kept getting bumped off. When our housesit near the English border city of Carlisle was confirmed, this was our opportunity.
We had only five days, so our goal was to see the scenic Highlands. Rain and cool weather conspired against us so we didn’t really see much other than what we observed as I drove. Sadly, this was the case for most of this trip.
Now, you might ask, why would you want to live in Scotland: it’s wet and cold in the winter, and it isn’t cheap. Actually, it can be.You can rent a reasonable apartment for less than £600 per month, or spend more or less depending on your budget. Food in the UK is relatively cheap compared with other countries, and you have Europe on your doorstep. The scenery is lovely here. The Scots are generally welcoming people.

But we weren’t here to consider Scotland as a place to live, as our preference is warmer climates. We were here to see as much of the country as we could. Because of the weather it would have to be mainly from the inside of a car.
