How To Save Money And See Malaysia AND Singapore: Johor Bahru and Singapore Botanic Gardens

Johor Bahru is on the southern tip of mainland Malaysia, across the causeway from Singapore. We hunkered down for two weeks to catch up on work and looking after ourselves. We used a gym every day and a 20-metre swimming pool, cleansing our skin and detoxing with a dry sauna. Johor Batu is Malaysia's third largest city and has experienced a boom. It is not very touristic: we visited the Old Chinese Temple, which isn't that old—19th Century. But it is considered an important building, as is a local glass Hindu temple, which we took a taxi to but it was closed. Food shopping is reasonable, and you can find clothes made in Asia quite cheap. If you like fish, you can buy sea bass for about $7 a kilo, and tilapia was available for about $5 per kilo. To get to JB, we took the Singapore metro and a bus service to go through customs and immigration. It took a few hours, which would make this journey quite a chore if done regularly. There is a train that takes you to the border and saves you some time at immigration, but all trains were sold out when we turned up on the day to buy a ticket. Even so, I am told it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to four ours to complete your journey. As for Singapore, we spent a couple of nights there after flying from Bali. We went to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which was an enjoyable afternoon. The gardens were founded in the 1850s and have played an important role in Singapore's history.
