Waves in the Moonlight - Barbara Arens
#med (Music.Every.Day)
Day 150 of my daily video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--posting a video of piano music every single day!
This piece is from the collection "Piano Paintings: 16 piano solos for art lovers". The collection features piano solos (by Barbara Arens and Alson Mathews) that are inspired by works of art. "Waves in the Moonlight" was inspired by Caspar David Friedrich's "Moonrise over the Sea" painted in 1822. I love this idea of linking music with art--it's so nice to be able to perform a piece and know (a little bit) of what the composer was thinking.
I am grateful to Barbara for sending me a copy of this beautiful collection. I have enjoyed looking at the beautiful art and playing some of these pieces! I always love the melodies that Barbara comes up with, and I love the challenges of hand crossing and arpeggios that make it fun for students to learn. I also love her clear directions of tempo, dynamic markings, and fingering. I know that she spends a lot of time playing, editing, and thinking from the point of view of someone playing her music!
Tune in tomorrow for more of my music.every.day experiment!
