Banana Sorbet - Gary K. Thomas

#med (Music.Every.Day)

Day 34:

Day 34 of my daily recording challenge is "Banana Sorbet" by Gary K. Thomas. This piece is a selection from List C (Romantic, 20th-, and 21st-century Repertoire) in the Celebration Series Sixth Edition Level 7 book from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

This Latin-inspired piece is fun--sweet and smooth, just like sorbet! Since we are in the middle of winter here, it's nice to dream about island breezes, sunshine, palm trees, and cool treats!

I find some latin rhythms tricky--there are rhythmic syncopations, and accents that help to give that latin vibe. Keeping it smooth and continuous is difficult and challenging for a lot of people (myself included!). The left hand rhythmic patterns is what holds the piece together--definitely practicing with the metronome helps to sort those out. It also helps to do a bit of rhythmic tapping with your hands to figure out hand coordination. The trickiest bits I find are the offbeat accented continuous eighth note passages in the right hand vs. the left hand rhythmic and offbeat syncopation. This stuff is so good for your brain!

Tune in tomorrow for another selection! Let's see how far I can take this!
