Detroit Red Wings Win Back-to-Back Stanley Cups (SportsCenter Highlights)
June 16, 1998 - After snapping a 41-year Stanley Cup drought the season prior, the Detroit Red Wings climbed to the top of the heap for a second consecutive season, sweeping the Washington Capitals 4-0 in the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals. The 1997-98 season took on significant importance to the Red Wings following a near-fatal limousine accident involving teammates Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov as well as team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov. Fetisov escaped without serious injury. Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov, however, were not as lucky. Both spent time in comas, with Konstantinov struggling to regain the ability to walk and speak. The Red Wings adopted the motto "Believe" for the duration of the '98 season in Konstantinov's honor, with the campaign culminating with Vladimir's appearance in Washington for Game 4, where he was wheeled onto the ice for the team's Stanley Cup celebration.
