RIP King Arthur and Thor actor passes away days before 59th birthday
Ray Stevenson, who starred in the first three Thor films, the Divergent series, and most recently the Oscar-winning epic RRR, passed away on Sunday at the age of 58.

Monday, Stevenson's publicist verified his death to PEOPLE, but no additional information regarding his cause of death is currently available. Three days prior to his 59th birthday, the actor perished.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported on Monday that at the time of his demise, Stevenson was filming the upcoming film Cassino on Ischia on the island of Ischia. The actor was hospitalized due to an ailment, according to the publication.

Stevenson, a British actor, made a number of television appearances in the 1990s and early 2000s prior to landing the role of Titus Pollo on the HBO series Rome. In Antoine Fuqua's 2004 film King Arthur, in which he portrayed the knight Dagonet, he made his cinematic debut around the same time.In 2008's Punisher: War Zone, Stevenson portrayed the Marvel character the Punisher / Frank Castle, not long after Rome's conclusion in 2007.

Volstagg was one of Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) closest companions throughout the first three films of the Thor franchise. The character passed away during the events of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

In the 2010s, Stevenson had a recurring role as Four's (Theo James) father, Marcus, in the young adult dystopian franchise Divergent. Stevenson entered the Star Wars universe with occasional voice roles as Gar Saxon in the animated television series Rebels and Clone Wars. The actor appeared in all three Divergent films, as well as films such as The Other Guys (2010). According to The Hollywood Reporter, he also filmed a role as a new antagonist in the upcoming Ashoka series. During April's Star Wars Celebration, he teased that "getting to wield the light saber is the best feeling in the world."

In addition, the actor portrayed the antagonist Governor Buxton in RRR, which was a crossover success in the United States and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards in March.

According to his IMDb profile, Stevenson's upcoming film Gateway to the West had entered post-production at the time of his demise, in addition to his roles as Ashoka and Cassino in Ischia.

The actor is survived by his son Sebastiano Derek Stevenson, whom he had in December 2007.
