SARANG Helicopter Display Team Indian Air Force | HAL's Dhruv | World's Best Helicopter Display Team
Sarag (Sanskrit: सारंग, lit. 'peacock') IAF’S Helicopter Display Team
151 Helicopter Unit was formed in year 2003 to evaluate the HAL’s Advanced Light Helicopter. The flight was re-designated as 151 HU and tasked to create the first helicopter display team of the Indian Air Force. The team was named Sarang, in Sanskrit meaning Peacock, that symbolises the national bird of India.
The team flies four modified, HAL Dhruv helicopters, also known as ALH or Advanced Light Helicopter.
The first display using the HAL Dhruv helicopter was performed during Aero India 2003 at Bangalore. Thereafter team performed at many shows across the globe including at Singapore, UAE, Berlin, Mauritius and Farnborough airshows.
Sarang flying display comprises of many complex and breath-taking maneuvers which starts with the ‘Inverted Wine Glass’ formation. This is followed by the ‘Line Astern’, ‘Star Maneuver’, the dolphin leap, level mash, level cross and the well-known Sarang split. The final adieu is performed by making a ‘heart’ in sky which steals many hearts on ground too.
Out of nearly 6 known helicopter display teams of the world, Sarang of the Indian Air Force are certainly the most impressive, both in looks and in the performance.
