Los naranjos de Sevilla | The Orange Trees of Seville, Spain

No matter what time of year you come to Seville, you're bound to notice its abundant orange trees. And if you live in Seville year round, you'll notice how they change throughout the year, as the fragrant orange blossoms that signal spring turn into bright orange fruit by winter.

This tree is part of the identity of Seville, and it's linked to the mythological founder, Hercules. Ever since way back when he stole some golden apples as part of his legendary 12 tasks, Seville has commemorated this event with massive planting of orange trees.

While these citrus plants are objectively amazing, it's been determined that there are too many of them. There is a specific disease that threatens lemon and orange trees, and in the case that it makes it's way to southern Spain, Seville would see a quarter of its trees wiped out.

No importa en qué época del año vengas a Sevilla, seguro que notarás sus abundantes naranjos. Y si vives en Sevilla durante todo el año, notarás cómo cambian a lo largo del año, ya que las fragantes flores de naranja que señalan la primavera se convierten en frutas de color naranja brillante en el invierno.

Este árbol forma parte de la identidad de Sevilla, y está vinculado al mitológico fundador, Hércules. Desde hace mucho tiempo, cuando robó unas manzanas doradas como parte de sus legendarias 12 tareas, Sevilla ha conmemorado este evento con la plantación masiva de naranjos.

Si bien estas plantas de cítricos son objetivamente sorprendentes, se ha determinado que hay demasiadas. Hay una enfermedad específica que amenaza a los limoneros y naranjos, y en caso de que llegue al sur de España, Sevilla vería arrasada una cuarta parte de sus árboles.
