Shobhana Rangachari - Unsung Vintage Masters - Day 6

Nādabhṛṅga brings you Day 6 of Unsung Vintage Masters. Today we will be listening to Vidushi Smt. Shobhana Rangachari (1954-1985). Not very much is known about Smt. Shobhana Rangachari. She was a disciple of Sri S Gopalakrishnan (of AIR Delhi) in the lineage of legendary Vidwan Sri Tiger Varadachariar, and her singing was inspired by Vidwan Sri M D Ramanathan, to the point that she was often referred to as "Lady MDR" by rasikas. Unfortunately this promising star of the Tiger Bani tragically passed away at the age of 31. Her passing left a lacuna in the inheritance of this great style, which remains to this day. Consequently, recordings of her music are very few and rare. Her music was notable for the unique, majestic and unhurried approach to kriti rendition and manodharma, akin to her great guru. She also learnt Hindustani Music under the doyenne Smt. Siddheshwari Devi of Benares. This concert was performed at Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha, Bombay, probably sometime in the 1970's. Unfortunately we do not have any details regarding the accompanying artistes. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. This concert has been digitally re-mastered for a pristine listening experience.

* - While Smt. Vidya Sankar (a direct disciple of the Syama Sastri family) has mentioned in her book that this song is a composition of Annaswami Sastri, there is an oral tradition which claims this to be a composition of Subbaraya Sastri. After consulting with Vidushi Smt. Ritha Rajan, we have come to know that there is no clear consensus on the matter of authorship for this song.
