Chalcopyrite (Reflected Light)
Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) optical properties using a reflected-light polarizing microscope (adapted from Spry & Gedlinske, 1987):
System: Tetragonal
Reflectance: Strong
Colour: Yellow to brassy yellow
VHN and polishing hardness: 181 - 203 / medium
Pleochroism: Weak, occasionally observable
Anisotropism: Weak but distinct, grey-blue to greenish yellow
Internal reflections: Not present
Twinning: Common parallel (100), (110), and (111); fine or broad lamellae
Commonly associated minerals: Arsenopyrite, covellite, cubanite, enargite, famatinite, galena, mackinawite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, stannite, valleriite
