Cinnabar (Reflected Light)

Cinnabar (HgS) optical properties using a reflected-light polarizing microscope (adapted from Spry & Gedlinske, 1987):

System: Hexagonal

Reflectance: Medium

Colour: White with bluish to greenish-grey tint

VHN and polishing hardness: 82 - 156 / soft

Pleochroism: weak to distinct along grain boundaries

Anisotropism: Strong, but tints may be masked by internal reflections. Light green colours may be observed; also various shades of grey wth blue and green tints

Internal reflections: Abundant, bright red

Twinning: Sinuous and polysynthetic twins may be present

Commonly associated minerals: Berthierite, chalcopyrite, galena, gold, marcasite, orpiment, pyrite, realgar, and stibnite
