Ensuring Safe Passage to School

The people’s business will not be disrupted.

On Tuesday, we moved forward with our vote to ensure children and their families can walk safely to school. This was done in spite of a vocal but unrepresentative minority of people who sought to bring our meeting to an end.

Let me be clear - our action on Tuesday won't and isn't meant to end homelessness. What it is, though, is one more tool in our sensible, reasonable approach to address the issue - one that balances public safety and safe access to our sidewalks with robust unarmed services, interim housing and permanent housing.

This is the needle that we must thread as City leaders and what governing is all about - deliberating and thoughtfully discussing tough issues so that we can arrive at a consensus.

Unfortunately, Tuesday's disruption, like similar incidents across our nation, was an assault on these values. As a City, we must stand together against the notion that actively undermining our public meetings is an acceptable form of democratic expression. It's our collective responsibility.
