Green Green Rocky Road

"Green Green Rocky Road" (GGRR) is an American folk tune popularized by Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) in the early 1960's. Although most agree that the tune was written by Fred Neil, some believe that he is not the original author. In any case, the tune has had a resurgence recently due to its appearance in the film "Inside Llewyn Davis". This film documents a week in the life of an American folk singer (loosely based upon Dave Van Ronk) in the early 60's in Greenwich Village, and GGRR is one of several folk tunes featured prominently in the film.

Like many folk tunes of the 60's, GGRR is played with a simple alternating bass and a catchy melody. I took a few liberties with the melody in arranging it as an instrumental, and played it here on a 1974 Martin D-35. I strapped on a capo to raise the pitch a bit for a brighter sound.

I'd recommend you listen to Van Ronk's version (or go see "Inside Llewyn Davis") to hear the lyrics and hear how Van Ronk played it over 50 years ago.
