040123 CONROE FIREFIGHTERS WORK 2 HOURS TO FREE VICTIM TRAPPED UNDER 18 WHEELER

Just before 1 am Saturday Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable Phillip Cash and his wife Heather were heading home from the Montgomery County Fair on I-45 when he had to swerve from striking a large debris field. The area of I-45 is unlit. As he got his vehicle turned around he spotted two 18-wheelers parked on the shoulder. One of those 18-wheelers had a Chevrolet Avalanche Z71 parked completely under the rear of one of those trucks which was a Federal Express 18-wheeler. He immediately called dispatch and went to the vehicle. He could see the driver was slightly moving. Moments later Conroe Fire arrived on the scene and started to work on freeing the driver. He was basically in a cacoon inside the truck. For almost two hours the pickup driver talked to rescuers as they attempted to get him out. One firefighter said it looked like the Home Depot tool aisle in the middle of the freeway as they had just about every tool possible being used. The driver was transported in critical but stable condition with facial injuries to HCA Conroe Hospital. Several other cars were damaged by debris on both the northbound and southbound sides of the freeway. Witnesses say both 18-wheelers were traveling about 70 miles per hour when the pickup hit the Federal Express Truck.
