India’s parliament has passed a new bill that could significantly limit who is recognised as transgender. The Transgender Persons Amendment Bill 2026, passed on 24 March, updates the country’s 2019 legislation on trans rights but introduces major changes to how identity is defined. Under the new system, a medical board will determine whether someone qualifies as transgender, with district officials issuing ID cards to those who meet the criteria. It also argues that identity cannot be based solely on what it describes as “self-perceived” gender, citing concerns about misuse. Previously, the 2019 legislation recognised a broad range of identities, including trans men and women, intersex people, queergender people and those with socio-cultural identities such as kinner or Hijra communities. #lgbtqia #india #hijra #transgender #transrights
