1. Fiji is made up of a collection of 333 islands but only one-third are inhabited; and over 500 islets. The largest island, Viti Levu, holds the capital city of Suva, the majority of Fiji’s population, and the highest peak in the country, Mount Tomanivi.

2. Prior to the 19th century the Fijians practiced human sacrifices as well as cannibalism. In 1867 Thomas Baker, the last victim, led a party to spread the gospel in the islands. When Baker met a local chief, Baker gifted a British comb and attempted to persuade him to convert to Christianity. When the chief refused, Baker decided to take his comb back, touching the chief's head as he did so, which is taken as a threat and offense in Fijian customs. Baker was killed and cannibalised along with 7 Fijian Christian workers.

3. It is possible to be in two different time zones at the same time when on the island of Taveuni due to the fact that Fiji is spread across the international dateline, an imaginary line that marks the change from one calendar day to the next.

4. The movie Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks, was filmed on the uninhabited islet of Monuriki, in Fiji. More than 100 people in the film team lived on the island during the production. Today Monuriki has become a tourist attraction.

5. Fiji’s population is 40% East Indian. They are the descendants of Indian contract labourers brought to the islands by the British colonial powers in the 19th century.

6. Fiji Water really does come from Fiji and it is one of the priciest brand of bottled waters. Fiji Water is sourced from Yaqara, on the island of Viti Levu. In the United States, 1 liter of this water can cost as much as 3-4$.

7. The islands of Fiji are home to some 900,000 people. That’s more than Bhutan or Cyprus and almost 3 times more than Iceland. About 70% of Fijians live on one island, Viti Levu.
