1. Novgorod Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast).
2. Novgorod is one of the oldest centers of Russian civilization. It lied on the historical trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks, which followed the Volkhov upstream to Lake Ilmen and then followed the course of the Lovat before eventually reaching the Dnieper River.
3. Veliky Novgorod is the largest city and administrative center of Novgorod Oblast, Russia. It is one of the oldest cities in Russia, being first mentioned in the 9th century. UNESCO recognized Novgorod as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
4. The Novgorod Republic was a medieval Rus' state from the 12th to 15th centuries. The Republic prospered as the easternmost port of the Hanseatic League and its Slavic, Baltic and Finnic people were much influenced by the culture of the Viking-Varangians and Byzantine people.
5. The Novgorod Detinets also known as the Novgorod Kremlin is a fortified complex (detinets) in Veliky Novgorod, Russia.
6. Veche was a popular assembly in medieval Slavic countries. In Novgorod and in Pskov, where the veche acquired great prominence, the veche was broadly similar to the Norse thing or the Swiss Landsgemeinde.
7. The legend of Slovene and Ruse and the city of Slovensk is a late chronicle legend of the XVII century about the settlement of Novgorod’s surroundings by the tribe of Slovenes.
