Installing LiFePO4 LITHIUM iPowerQueen.com Batteries - See Description

This video covers how I followed manufacturers guidelines & wired my four iPowerQueen.com (PQ) Lithium LiFePO4 batteries to keep them balanced. It also shows an additional wiring path with MTB terminal fuses to protect against a single battery failure. These PQ LiFePO4 batteries replaced 6 large AGM batteries and instead of converting my previous all-Magnum setup to all-Victron, we kept the Magnum MS-2812 inverter-charger to save some money, then used it in parallel with a new Victron Solar Charge Controller, Shunt and Low Temp protection. This video covers most of the project, while concentrating on wiring the new Lithium batteries. Wiring of the new PQ’s followed manufacturer recommendations as to balancing and use of common Pos/Neg bus tie bars to prevent out-of-balance issues. It also shows the use of individual MTB fuses on each Pos battery terminal to protect against a single BMS/Battery failure. ALWAYS follow the installation recommendations of your battery manufacturer.

DO NOT WIRE LITHIUM BATTERIES LIKE OLDER LEAD ACIDS OR AGM’s!

Lithium batteries have much tighter voltage ranges compared to lead acids and they can get out of balance faster. Because of this and when using more than one battery in an installation, my battery manufacturer recommends the use of common Neg/Pos bus bars to ensure that each battery is placed under exactly the same load as its neighbors. The PQ owner’s manual (provided with each battery), has detailed procedures for connecting multiple batteries that includes individual top balancing each battery in the pack, then connecting them in series without a load to balance them together, and finally connecting them with equal length cables to a common bus bar such that the entire pack load is distributed equally among each of the batteries. This is all done to help prevent a dreaded out-of-balance condition between batteries that will occur if they are wired in a simple End-To-End Positive-Negative terminal configuration, as is commonly done with older generation liquid & AGM lead acid batteries. Even wired according to PQ instructions, they still recommends periodically disconnecting each battery from one another and doing a top balance.

Additionally and besides a solid bar balancing “circuit” with equal loaded Pos/Neg bus bar load connection points, I also added individual battery fusing to prevent severe pack damage in the unlikely event one battery/BMS fails and causes a “run away” (drawing current from it’s neighbors). Compared to lead acids, lithiums can supply huge amounts of current almost instantly. Likewise, in the event of a fault in one battery and/or it’s internal BMS, that bad battery could draw a huge amount of current from its neighbors. Lithium battery packs are commonly wired without such protective circuits. When installed this way there is no fusing to stop internal transfer of current within a pack should this happen. So I installed a second layer of protection in the form of individual MTB terminal fusing for each battery and that was in addition to the one large fuse for the overall pack load limit.

This system has performed flawlessly while far exceeding the capabilities of my prior “monster” 1,260 Ah AGM system! It has been used off grid for weeks at a time this summer. Compared to my prior AGM pack, the Lithiums are a game changer!
