Sky News host Paul Murray says Melbourne's reopening brings relief for the state that’s been "punished with an awful government".

His comment comes after Premier Daniel Andrews finally green-lit the opening of retail, restaurants, hotels and cafes from Wednesday after Melburnians spent weeks in lockdown while case numbers were extremely low.

"The longest lockdown in the world is finally going to come to an end," Mr Murray said.

“For once there’s not a lot of asterix, a lot of life goes back to normal, not fully normal, but goes back to normal in Melbourne at the end of tomorrow night”.
