Paul R. Tregurtha - Does the Biggest Boat Look Even Bigger at Night?

Here is the Paul R. Tregurtha arriving in Duluth, Minnesota just before the stroke of midnight on August 27, 2023. She was returning empty to the Twin Ports to pick up a split load of low-sulfur coal and petroleum coke from the Midwest Energy Terminal on the Superior side of the harbor. The coal and coke were scheduled for delivery to the power plants at St. Clair and Monroe in Michigan. I debated whether to mark this video as August 27 or 28, as the clock struck midnight sometime during the Paul R. Tregurtha's arrival, but the official time that the Tregurtha was logged into the harbor was 11:59pm on August 27, so I went with the official log. As it was midnight, the Tregurtha withheld the traditional captain's salute to let the nearby residents on Park Point get a good night's sleep.

I've often had viewers state that the lake freighters somehow look bigger at night. So I had to wonder if the biggest ship on the Great Lakes could somehow look even bigger than she does in my daytime videos. It doesn't hurt that the Tregurtha was arriving empty, so she was standing very tall in the water. The moonlight also helped to illuminate the Tregurtha on this arrival, giving the harbor a brighter glow that we typically see on these late night arrival.

As the Tregurtha made her way into the harbor to load coal, the American Century was departing the coal dock to make her way onto Lake Superior. We will be seeing her departure in an upcoming video!

The 1013' 6" Paul R. Tregurtha is the longest ship on the Great Lakes, earning her the title "Queen of the Lakes." She has held that title longer than any other lake carrier. She was launched in 1981 as the William J. DeLancey, a name she carried until 1990 when she was named after the Vice Chairman of Interlake Steamship, the ship's operator. The Paul R. Tregurtha is powered by a pair of medium-speed MaK M43C 6-cylinder diesel engines providing a combined 17,120 BHP. Her five cargo holds are accessed by 36 deck hatches. She can hold a maximum of 68,000 tons. Her self-unloading system consists of a 260-foot unloading boom which can discharge at a rate of 10,000 tons of iron ore per hour or 6,000 net tons of coal per hour.
