Gerald Finzi - Elegy (Op. 22) for violin and piano

If you know Finzi's music, but not this particular piece, I don't think you could mistake it for any other composer. In this beautiful elegy, one can hear echoes of his (earlier) "Eclogue" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkQbzZgwfl0&feature=related . And if you aren't familiar with Finzi, I hope this inspires you to explore more of his music.

Daniel Hope (violin), Simon Mulligan (piano). Both musicians here emphatically "get" Finzi, and it's a privilege to hear their artistry.

"Composed in June 1940 and intended to be the central section of a violin sonata, this serene movement acknowledges Finzi's indebtedness to Bach. The sonority and length of line are beguiling as the music builds to a climax of arresting intensity, from which it recedes to the final repose, evident too in the simplicity of its opening" - Boosey & Hawkes repertoire notes.

The pictures of Finzi I got from the internet. There are very few of him alas, and low quality at that, so I added a few landscape photos I took of Derbyshire's Peak District. The pic of the church and village of Aldbourne, Wiltshire I got from the net. Here, he devoted himself to composing and apple-growing, saving a number of rare English apple varieties from extinction. Oh, I wish I could have met him, if only to say "thank you Mr Finzi".
