William Byrd c. 1539 - 1623: 'Ne Irascaris Domine' & 'Civitas Sancti Tui'. Performed by VOCES8

Here, VOCES8 performs English composer William Byrd’s transcendent double motet ‘Ne Irascaris Domine’ and ‘Civitas Sancti Tui’ in the Gresham Centre in London. I think it is absolutely divine - both in composition, and in performance here by the immensely talented VOCES8 choral group.

The music of the Renaissance always struck me very deeply - I must have had a previous life in that era, I think.

I hope you enjoy it too.

Latin Text

Ne irascaris, Domine, satis
et ne ultra memineris iniquitatis nostrae.
Ecce, respice, populus tuus omnes nos.
Civitas sancti tui facta est deserta.
Sion deserta facta est, Jerusalem desolata est.
(Isaiah 64 v. 9)

English Translation

Be not angry, O Lord, still,
neither remember our iniquity for ever.
Behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.
The holy cities are a wilderness.
Sion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

I have asked VOCES8 for permission to cross-post here to my unmonetised Channel, but they have not responded so far. Should they object, I shall immediately remove this upload.
