Ralph Vaughan Williams: Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. Two ancient places in Derbyshire.

Re-upload of this beautiful Vaughan Williams piece I posted some years ago - here with different visuals, namely two Bronze Age Monuments in Derbyshire, England - c. 2500 - 2000 BC.

Opening shot: (DJI Mavic Air 2 in 180 Pano mode) Minninglow (or Minning Low) is the largest and most prominently sited barrow in the Derbyshire Peak District, 2km to the west of Aldwark. Situated on a hill, surrounded by an earl's coronet of beech trees 500m to the east of The High Peak Trail, it is a landmark for miles around at 1214 ft (370m) above sea level.

Measuring 34m by 44m, this round barrow consists of at least four chambers and has undergone a number of construction phases. The Low originally began life as a single chamber with a small mound comprised mainly of limestone probably during the Neolithic period. It was later covered by a long barrow with four chambers and later still converted into a massive circular mound, perhaps during the Bronze Age.

Stone Circle: (Nikon D810 - various lenses) Nine Stones Close (aka The Grey Ladies) is a small stone circle located on the edge of Harthill Moor in Derbyshire, part of a rich prehistoric landscape which includes Bronze Age barrows and settlement enclosures. It consists of four remaining upright stones which were originally part of a circle of around 30m in diameter and is the site of several others which were removed in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the stones was appropriated in the 18th century is now used as an oversized field gatepost nearby.

It is uncertain whether there were originally nine stones, one theory being that nine is a corruption of 'noon', said to be the time when, according to local folklore, fairies would gather at the site to dance.

Excavations in 1847, 1877 and 1939 found flints and pot-sherds which date the monument to the Bronze Age.

Music

Based on a 16th century English folk-tune, what noble music RVW gave us all here in this piece, scored for harp (preferably two) and string orchestra. I was astounded by its beauty upon first hearing, and still am. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus (also called the Dives and Lazarus or Lazarus and Dives) is a well-known parable of Jesus appearing in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 16:19–31).
