John Ireland - A Downland Suite for String Orchestra (Minuet)

I heard John Ireland's "Holy Boy" many years ago on the radio, and I found his music not only charming, but emotionally deep, as "light music" can often convey, perversely.

Here is another of his wonderful compositions: Tudor hues much in evidence in this gently rocking, folk-song-like minuet.

As a boy who was raised in the countryside of Britain, for me, the English school of composers simply get it, and get me. It's hard to explain why - but power it is, and it runs deeply in my blood. Bach is my favourite composer by a long stretch, but my Desert Island Discs selection would be full of the English School in my loneliness and spiritual starvation!

I took these pictures this month, mostly in the vicinity of Parwich in the Peak District of England, and I included a couple of shots of my recently-acquired hens. I added at close some shots I took of the "supermoon" of this year, when the moon reached its closest point to Earth, known as lunar perigee: it appears quite a bit bigger and brighter during this brief period.

Here is another of Lyrita's absolutely marvellous re-released recordings: the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Adrian Boult.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I.
