Delco 3 Wire Alternator Conversion Sketchup for Ford Tractor

#Delcothreewire #alternatorconversion #ford2000
A step by step drawing is made for what I am doing to change an existing 12 volt generator over to a 12 volt three wire alternator for a 1972 Ford 2000 three cylinder tractor. There is a continual verbal description of the steps involved during the sketch and in some cases the reasons behind decisions made are given as well.
This is not a "How To" video, but instead it is one showing what it is that I do to solve a problem with an old electrical system on an old tractor. This is not limited to the one tractor noted, it is easily adaptable to many other old tractors. This works for me, however your results may vary so research a bit further before you attempt to solve the electrical issue with your old tractor.
This is not the only way nor is it the best way to accomplish the task. I have converted many, many tractors over the years and this is just one of many variations used to make the conversion. For instance a Light Emitting Diode (LED) is not absolutely necessary...a standard diode from Radio Shack has been used on a few of them as well as a standard 12v light bulb. Off the top of my head I cannot recall the specific identification of those two components, but neither are anything special or hard to obtain. Now sometimes you may install an LED that flickers a bit. I've got that happening on one, but the system still works, the battery stays charged. If you install one and it doesn't come on with the key, chances are the polarity is reversed. Remember this is essentially an electrical check valve, so with it connected with reverse polarity, the voltage is held in check before it can get to the LED to light it up. Reverse the wires and see if it works. Usually the black wire is the positive wire, but I verify them first with a 9 volt battery before they are connected into the circuit.
Remember as I say in most videos, don't do as I say and don't do as I do....but if you can glean a tiny bit of help to get you going in the direction you need to solve your problem, so be it. But be advised this is just one of the ways I do it and your experience my not be so satisfactory....Research, research then do more research.
As always too, this and virtually all videos on this channel are really uploaded for the entertainment value and not to be taken as the gospel truth on any subject.
I did a 'slap together quick' video on the fly a couple years ago to help a friend in Canada. Unfortunately it has gotten over 70,000 views to date and it is almost embarrassing that so many people saw it done so haphazardly. The only reason I uploaded it was I didn't know how to email a video to him privately....LOL. Hopefully this video will rectify some of those shortcomings. Dunno...time will tell. One thing for sure though, both videos prove I am no sketch artist !!
Fast forward to now, and I have yet another Canadian internet friend @ Butler Outdoors Canada who has let me know he comes up a bit short in the electrical department while working on his old tractors. So this video is dedicated to that young fellow to help him expand his horizons a bit in troubleshooting some of his old machines. So Andrew, this one's for you my friend !!
