Allonautilus, Nautilus Survey, Solomon Islands 2019: TRAP #12
This video is one of five programs highlighting the habitat and organisms observed from a baited deep-reef trap set in Solomon Islands in 2019. The primary purpose of this mission was to record the presence of the Fuzzy Nautilus (Allonautilus scrobiculatus) as well as the more common species, Nautilus cf. pompilius. A total of 31 hours of 4K video was recorded from all five traps.
This video is from Trap #12, set on November 9 and retrieved on November 10, 2019. The location was in New Georgia, Marovo at Wickham Island set at a depth of 264 meters. The complete video was 8 hours. This video, at 8 mins 45 secs, has been edited to show only the significant highlights.
Note the timecode in the lower right corner of the video, which was set at “zero” when the trap reached the ocean floor. Refer to this time code to see when various scenes actually took place. The time code represents: hours: minutes: seconds: video frames. Barely visible below the timecode is the actual date and local time recorded by the camera.
We are grateful for the participation and research assistance from Solomon Islanders Willie Atu, Simon Vuto, Peter Lausu and Michael Giningele.
Dr. Bruce Mundy has provided initial identifications on many of the fishes on the video recordings.
Dr. Daphne Fautin identified the Stylobates anemone associated with the Parapagurus hermit crabs.
Dr. Owen Anderson provided preliminary identification of the echinoderms.
