How to find relief from a meniscus tear without surgery

Surgery may not be needed….

When you experience what’s called a degenerative meniscus tear, your meniscus may actually be able to heal itself‼️

A degenerative meniscus tear can happen without a specific injury and can be common with osteoarthritis ☝🏽

Signs of a meniscus tear include (and may not be limited to) pain with weight-bearing and reduced pain with rest and pinpoint pain right along the joint line of the knee (where your two bones meet on either side of your knee cap 🦵🏽)

For these degenerative meniscus tears research suggests that surgical outcomes are not usually any better than those who did proper exercise with physical therapy.

Meaning…surgery likely isn’t the first line of treatment ☝🏽and you can get the same benefits with less side effects and less risk with EXERCISE ✅

Now there are certain times when surgery is warranted and will depend heavily on where your meniscus tear is 👀

But for the most part muscle strengthening has the power to reduce pain, improve function, and of course increase strength! 💪🏽

Your knees need to feel supported but standing may not be comfortable at first ☝🏽

Start with seated movements working on thigh and hip strength and progress to standing once you can do seated exercises without any pain ☝🏽

Make sure seated movements feel good and don’t increase pain. You can start with leg lifts, leg kicks with a hold and bridges as long as they feel okay- try every other day or every day to start 😇
