The invasion of aliens species in the forests of the Black Sea coast of Russia

Our world has become smaller. The flow of people and goods between cities has increased. Along with these flows come alien organisms that pose a threat to native ecosystems. On the Black Sea coast of Russia, this unintentional introduction of alien organisms has put some native species at risk of extinction.

The video shows a routine inspection of forest areas for the presence of some invasive alien insect species.

The box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is a species of native to Japan, China, and Korea. It was introduced from Italy to Sochi, with the planting stock of Buxus sempervirens. The following year it defoliated Buxus colchica in large quantities. Nowadays, boxwoods have almost completely disappeared on the Black Sea coast.

The oak lace bug (Corythucha arcuata) is a pest of oaks in the Old World. It is native to the New World and was first observed in Europe in 2000. This species first appeared in the Krasnodar region of Russia in 2016.
