[The Black Cat] Vitus Werdegast - Eyes on Fire

"And now you come to me, playing at being an avenging angel — childishly thirsty for my blood. We understand each other too well. We know too much of life."

I began this tribute years ago to honour my favourite film of all time. I tried remaking it on iMovie last month, hoping to release it on the anniversary of the film's release, but I didn't quite get round to it. I don't like this as much as I should, as I find iMovie a pain in the hole to edit on compared to Sony Vegas, plus the clip quality isn't the best. However I feel I haven't posted for so long I want to give you something, and hopefully a few people enjoy it.

While the song ironically is most famously associated with Twilight, the line 'flay you alive' obviously immediately brought me to this film and the haunting yet oddly triumphant melody seemed perfect for me. This video I suppose would be from Vitus' POV; while Karloff is stunning and does so much with his role, making it utterly unique, menacing and strangely real (yet soulless) in a way few horror movie villains manage to be, I still think Bela steals the film. There is just something about Lugosi that no other actor or personality has, and this is his best role by far. My opinions on Vitus have changed wildly since I first watched the film about 10 years ago, and every rewatch since they've changed again (I think I'm on my 20th viewing?). If you read around the film, it's clear his character was meant to have a very dark side which we see hints of-- but if you are looking at the film itself, he's one of the most self-sacrificing antiheroes (to the point of self-sadism) on film and you feel his pain so strongly you understand how he can commit such a terrible deed by the end of the 64 minutes.

I plan to make another video including The Black Cat, and one focusing on Karloff & Lugosi's dynamic (perhaps for Pride month; as blasphemous as it sounds they are queer icons on screen). In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this, and continue to keep well and safe. It's surreal how long I have had this channel, and how I still get so much support, for which I am really grateful. It's lovely to see so many people just as obsessed with old hollywood and cult shows as me! I am thinking of perhaps making videos talking about some of my favourite movies, actors, and genres if people would be interested, so if you get this far please let me know if you would like to see that too!
